States Where Online Sports Betting is Legal – 2023

Sports betting is a billion-dollar industry in the United States. The American Gaming Association estimates that Americans bet more than $140 billion in states where online sports betting is legal yearly. Millions of online sports bettors worldwide enjoy placing wagers with legal bookmakers. Arizona Online Sports Betting

On April 12th, 2021, the Arizona state senate passed HB 2772 by a 23-6 margin, approving both online and retail sports betting. The bill was signed into law on May 1st by Governor Jan Brewer and is set to go into effect on January 1st, 2022. Luckily, we can now bet on our favorite sports teams in person or online! 

But before you head out to place your bet, there are some things you need to know. You must be 21 years old or older to gamble, and no one under 18 can work at any casino or gaming establishment. You must also be physically present at the location where you’re gambling—no remote betting is allowed here (unless you’re playing online). Colorado Online Sports Betting

Colorado is one of the more recent states to legalize sports betting. Colorado’s sports betting laws are relatively strict compared with some other states, and you won’t find any online bookmakers in the state.

Colorado has several casinos, including Black Hawk and Central City. However, if you want to play casino games for real money, it’s best to head out west and visit Las Vegas—or even better yet, go all out by visiting Nevada and New Jersey!

Illinois Online Event Gaming

Illinois is one of the states where online sports betting is legal. Illinois has a sports betting law called HB2256 that requires a sports betting license to operate an online sportsbook. Regulations and Rules are set by the Illinois Gaming Board. 

The state also has its lottery, which means it’s allowed to offer online sports betting for the first time since 2010 (when New Jersey became the first U.S. state to do so). The Illinois Lottery introduced its new app last year and already boasted more than 70,000 users!

Indiana Online Sportsbook Apps

Indiana is one of the states where online sports betting is legal. Currently, at least 14 online sports betting apps are available in the state, including DraftKings and BetMGM.

Betting Online Sports in Iowa

One of the states where online sports betting is Legal is Iowa. Even with no pro teams in its borders, Iowa legalized online sports betting in 2019. The online and in-person launches took place in August 2019. Caesars Sportsbook was the first app to launch. The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission is the state’s regulatory body for sports betting. Online Sports Betting in Louisiana

Currently, there are now seven live mobile sportsbooks in the state. You must be 21 or older to gamble. Only 55 of 64 parishes can wager on sports. Michigan Online Sportsbook Apps

Michigan is one of the most recent states to legalize online sports betting. They have a long history with casinos and gambling but have been slow to regulate it online. However, the state has made up for lost time with over 23 Michigan legal online sportsbooks.

While many people might think that Michigan doesn’t care about its laws regarding sports betting because it legalized it late, it’s not quite simple. The Michigan Gaming Control Board has put a lot of effort into ensuring that people know what’s allowed in each state before making bets there.

New Jersey Online Sports Betting

New Jersey was the first state other than Nevada to legalize sports betting, and it has become one of the most popular places in the country for online gambling. In addition to online casinos and poker rooms (many of which are part of more extensive land-based operations), you can also bet on sports at your local casino or racetrack in New Jersey.

Sportsbook Apps In Pennsylvania

You can bet on sports in the Keystone State thanks to a law passed in 2019.  There are at least ten sportsbook apps in the state, with more to come.

To place a wager, you must be at least 21 years old and have a valid ID to prove it. Sports betting is legal both online and in casinos, as well as racetracks—there’s no distinction between locations. It’s also worth noting that because of Pennsylvania’s proximity to New Jersey (where sports betting has been legal for nearly 20 years), there are far more options for locating your favorite bookie than you might expect from such a new market.

Nevada Sports Betting

The first state to have legalized sports betting in Nevada. However, with all the pomp and circumstance of legal gambling, it only has about a dozen sportsbook mobile apps available.  

Nevada does not allow you to open a sportsbook mobile app account remotely. You must travel to your chosen app’s land-based casino to finish registration and make your first deposit.

Tennessee Online Sports Betting

Tennessee is taking a different approach with a mobile-only model of sports betting.  Currently, five sportsbook apps are online. Sports betting became legal in Tennessee in November 2020.

West Virginia Online Sports Betting

West Virginia legalized sports betting in March 2018. If you’re interested in betting on sports online, West Virginia is one of the states where it’s legal. Sports betting is legal at two casinos and six online sportsbook apps

Wyoming Sports Betting

One of the smallest sports betting states is Wyoming. Wyoming sports betting launched in 2021, and four sportsbook apps are available in the state.
