Pattaya is a captivating city in Thailand, known for its vibrant nightlife, stunning beaches, and an array of experiences that cater to every traveler. Whether you’re a party enthusiast, a foodie, or simply looking to explore on a budget, Pattaya has something to offer. In this guide, I’ll take you through my journey with Pattaya nightlife, sharing insights on where to stay, what to eat, and how to navigate the city’s famous nightlife.
Getting to Pattaya
Traveling to Pattaya is quite straightforward. I took an Air India flight from Delhi to Bangkok for just $92. Once I landed in Bangkok, I hopped on a bus to Pattaya, which cost me around $3. This budget-friendly approach is perfect for travelers looking to maximize their experience without breaking the bank.
Where to Stay in Pattaya
I booked my stay at the Nonze Hostel through Hostelworld.com for about $13 per night. This hostel offers a unique blend of hotel and hostel features. You get a private pod-like setup, complete with air conditioning and a mini cabinet. However, be aware that it lacks some traditional hostel amenities, such as a kitchen. But, they do provide free coffee and water dispensers, which is a plus.
For those seeking more traditional accommodations, there are plenty of three-star hotels available starting from $23 per night. Always check reviews on platforms like TripAdvisor before booking to ensure a pleasant stay.
First Impressions and Hygiene Tips
Upon arrival, I felt the exhaustion of travel creeping in. It’s essential to prioritize hygiene after a long flight, so I recommend showering as soon as you reach your accommodation. This simple act can help you feel refreshed and ready to explore.
The hostel features a common washroom shared between men and women, which is quite common in Western countries. It’s clean and well-maintained, making it a good option for travelers. Just a heads up: you might encounter different cultural norms regarding showering and dressing.
Exploring Pattaya – Daytime Adventures
After a quick rest, I explored Pattaya’s famous viewpoint. A bike taxi ride to the viewpoint cost me 150 Baht, and the views were absolutely breathtaking. This spot is a must-visit, especially around sunset.
Khao Phra Bat, also known as Pattaya Hill, is situated between South Pattaya and Jomtien and offers the vantage point for this view.
The Nightlife of Pattaya
As the sun set, I headed towards the iconic Walking Street. The atmosphere is electric, with live music bars and tourists snapping selfies. If you visit during the evening, expect to see families and children enjoying the vibrant surroundings. However, as the night progresses, the scene shifts dramatically.
Walking Street is not officially a red-light district but has a reputation. Prostitution is illegal in Thailand, yet the presence of go-go bars and adult entertainment is evident. It’s essential to navigate this area with caution and respect.
Understanding the Go-Go Bars
Walking along the street, you’ll notice go-go bars on every corner. Ladies will try to entice you to enter, but it’s best to avoid eye contact and keep walking if you’re not interested. If you decide to enter, ask about the prices of lady drinks upfront to avoid any unpleasant surprises.
These bars often encourage patrons to drink heavily, so be mindful of your spending and consumption. The ambiance can be lively, with shows and performances that attract a diverse crowd.
Ladyboys and Cultural Insights
Pattaya is also known for its ladyboys, who are integral to the nightlife scene. Many are friendly and open to photos for a small fee. While some may be difficult to distinguish from women at first glance, treating everyone with respect and kindness is crucial.
Finding the Right Nightclub
After exploring various bars, I was on the hunt for a decent nightclub. One of the clubs I checked out was called Nasha Night Club, where DJ Vicky was spinning tracks reminiscent of an Indian wedding reception. While it had a fancy vibe, it wasn’t quite what I was looking for in terms of a genuine nightclub experience.
After much searching, I finally found a nightclub that suited my taste, but the search was exhausting. Walking the streets while lugging around a camera can take its toll, especially after a long day of travel.
Culinary Delights in Pattaya
After all that walking, I was starving and decided to explore the street food scene. Pattaya offers a wide variety of food options, from Pad Thai to exotic delicacies like scorpions and grasshoppers. I opted for Chicken Pad Thai, which was delicious and cost me only $2.
Expenses Breakdown
For those curious about costs, here’s a quick breakdown of my expenses during this trip:
- Flight, bus, and tuk-tuk: $97
- Hostel stay for two nights: $25 ($12.50 per night)
- Lunch at McDonald’s: $2.50
- Dinner (Chicken Pad Thai): $1.50
- Trip to the viewpoint: 250 Baht (₹100 for return)
What’s Next?
In my next Pattaya video, I’ll delve into why this city is so popular among middle-aged travelers and share the overall costs of my two-day stay. Stay tuned as I transition to Bangkok, where I’ll give you a glimpse of one of the best parties of my life at the Mad Monkey Hostel.
